The book's subtitle is ''The Untold Story of America's First Indian War''. Much of his writing deals with the American Southwest. ==Background== Working most of his career in and around newspapers, he is a former daily newspaper reporter, a former owner and publisher of a weekly newspaper, and an emeritus member of the journalism faculty at the University of New Mexico. He is an infantry combat veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and other awards while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division in 1969.
